to consume less. generally, buy less things. spend my allowance on things that meet certain criteria.

there are little treats that i don’t need to spend a long time considering, and here they are:

  • socks
  • candles
  • nail polish
  • tea
  • soap
  • chocolate
  • desserts
  • consumables in general
  • video games under $15
  • movie theater tickets

here are things i consider a little bit, that i perhaps pause before purchasing:

  • books
  • video games under $30
  • t-shirts
  • plants
  • takeout

here are things i research before purchasing:

  • undies
  • dresses
  • jackets / coats
  • sweaters
  • gifts
  • massages
  • concert tickets
  • board games

here are things i research before purchasing to the point of exhaustion and wondering if i even actually want the thing anymore:

  • furniture
  • appliances
  • computer things and peripherals
  • hiking gear
  • camping gear
  • shoes
  • gym clothes
  • tattoos
  • cat-related things
  • baking things
  • facials
  • haircuts
  • classes
  • supplements

here are things that are a hard no, no thank you, i have too much or am uninterested:

  • canvas tote bags
  • reusable drinkware
  • jeans
  • pants without elastic
  • clothes that are too short
  • polyester
  • disposable face masks (like, the beauty kind)
  • purses
  • jewelry
  • things with brand names on them
  • replacements for things that aren’t broken
  • seasonal decorations
  • cookbooks
  • getting my nails done at a salon
  • self-tanning
  • beanies
  • gadgets as a general idea, things that “solve” for a problem i don’t have
  • magazines
  • slippers
  • collections, e.g. stamps, coins, dvd, vhs, comic books, vinyl, pop figures, signed jerseys, minis
  • hobby things i know i’ll never pick up
  • outdoor furniture
